Health & Safety
Keeping people safe is at the heart of what we do.
Reducing risks
We want all our teams to go home safely at the end of each day. It’s not a top-down approach to policies, everyone lives and breathes how to do their job safely. We are constantly reviewing how we operate and finding safer ways to work.
We keep everyone safe by continuous training and strict safety protocols – ensuring that every project is executed safely and efficiently.
Daily site briefings
Every morning starts on our sites with a documented team meeting, which covers the plan for the day, specific health & safety risks and any relevant policies.
Quarterly Health & Safety meetings
We hold quarterly meetings with our site managers and contracts managers, where we share feedback from onsite teams, safety policies and areas for improvement. These meetings often lead to policy changes.
Monthly SHEQ reviews
As well as the routine work on site related to health & safety, each site has at least one visit by our SHEQ team each month.
In-house expertise
Our dedicated in-house health and safety team work tirelessly to find and reduce risks for our teams. They cover everything from our accreditations and training, to welfare and PPE.
Our in-house plant support and maintenance team are responsible for all of our plant and machinery, resolving any issues quickly and maintaining our kit to the highest of standards . They help to keep projects moving forward and our teams working safely.
We have our own vehicle workshop at the head office to look after all of our vans and cars. This gives us 100% confidence that we provide safe and well maintained vehicles to our employees.
The in-house CCTV drainage units carry out surveys and assessments of our drainage works. They also prevent any potential issues that could impact our team and/or the general public.
We are a National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) accredited training provider which means we can provide in-house training on plant and machinery to our teams.
Use the latest technology
Investing in the right technology enables us to provide a safer workplace for our teams.
We increasingly use vacuum excavation across our sites, which is a safer and more efficient way of excavating around existing utilities. This method reduces the risk of damaging underground pipes and cables , which can be a significant safety hazard to our groundworkers.
Each of our site supervisors use iPads so they can instantly access all health & safety documents. They can also communicate in real-time with the Health & Safety team at head office.
We use a QR code system on all our plant and machinery, so everyone on-site can easily view manuals, servicing history and safety information related to specific machines.
We have our own e-learning platform, alongside our face to face training programme, so we can be certain everyone in the business is trained in the latest industry health & safety policies and in all aspects of their role.
We use Chime Software to provide us with a paperless, real-time digital platform where we can manage our teams on-site, manage training requirements and communicate seamlessly between sites and our head office teams. Since this was implemented in 2023 it has truly transformed the way we work (for the better of course!).
Mental health at work
We're setting the standard for mental health within groundworks. We're the first groundworks business in the UK to achieve ISO 45003 (psychological health & safety at work) via NQA and the very first business in the South West to have achieved this standard. This paired with having our very own in-house mental health first-aiders and daily welfare checks for our on-site teams helps to ensure that the mental wellbeing of our teams is being cared for at all times.
