Congratulations Jake

We’re delighted to see Fleet Support Engineer Jake Wilton take to the road in his very own brand-new fleet support van—marking another fantastic milestone in his journey with Champion Groundworks.

Jake initially joined Champion as an apprentice, completing his Level 3 Land-based Service Engineering Technician qualification through Bicton College. Living near Liskeard, he attended college every five or six weeks while gaining valuable hands-on experience both in the workshop and alongside our Fleet Support team, primarily across Cornwall.

‍

His route into the industry was not entirely planned. After completing work experience within a different business, Jake had hoped to begin an apprenticeship with the company. When its apprenticeship scheme was discontinued, he was recommended to Champion—and the rest, as they say, is history.

‍

Jake completed his apprenticeship four years ago and has now spent around six years working independently on the road. During that time, he has become a trusted and valued member of our Fleet Support team, helping to keep Champion’s extensive fleet of plant and machinery running safely and efficiently across sites throughout Cornwall and Devon.

‍

The role has also given Jake an impressive knowledge of the South West’s roads—and, we imagine, more than a few useful shortcuts!

‍

For Jake, one of the best parts of the job is the variety. Every day brings different sites, machinery and challenges, as well as the opportunity to meet and work with people from across the business. Although much of his role is carried out independently, he works closely with the wider Fleet Support team. Jake particularly enjoys working alongside Paul, Quinn and Henry, who are all long-standing and dedicated members of Champion.

“We’ve got a great team dynamic and they’re a really good crew to work with,” said Jake. “I enjoy being out on the road, visiting different sites and meeting lots of people. No two days are ever quite the same.”

Now, Jake has taken delivery of his first-ever brand-new fleet support vehicle—a significant investment from Champion in both our fleet operations and his continued development within the business.

‍

Having finished moving his tools and equipment into the van on Monday, Jake wasted no time putting it to work. In its very first few days on the road, the vehicle has already travelled more than 500 miles, with Jake supporting projects across Cornwall.

‍

The new van gives him a modern, reliable and fully equipped mobile workspace, helping him respond efficiently when our teams and machinery need assistance on site.

From joining Champion as an apprentice to becoming the proud driver of his own brand-new support van, Jake’s journey is a brilliant example of where an apprenticeship, hard work and a willingness to learn can lead.
